Unplug and Reconnect to get a good night’s sleep

A recently published article on IndyStar says “Ninety-five percent of those surveyed use some type of electronics, including a computer, video game, cellphone or television, at least a few nights weekly within an hour before bed.”

Before going to bed, Bettnie LaRue checks her Facebook page, dating websites, email and news sites, blogs and maybe watches some TV.

Her iPhone serves as her alarm, so it’s right by her bed. She can send or answer texts from any of her 1,000 Facebook friends — or look up a movie time. She might play app game “Words With Friends” or read for hours on her Nook e-reader.

One obvious solution to Unplug and Reconnect™ is ramping down technology use 30 minutes to an hour or so before bedtime.

Turn off the cellphone, TV and video games, and get off the Internet.

“Create some sort of regimen to prepare yourself to go to bed,” said Dan Pankiewicz, director of the Indiana Sleep Center in Greenwood. “You need time to rest, relax and purge some of the sensory input.”

He suggests listening to relaxing music, taking a warm bath, reading a pleasurable book — anything that’s soothing, not bright, loud or stimulant-filled.
